Tobradex Eye Drop 5ml: Relief for Eye Infections and Inflammation

Tobradex Eye Drop is a sterile ophthalmic suspension that combines a broad-spectrum antibiotic with a potent corticosteroid. It is widely used in Nigeria to treat various inflammatory eye conditions where a bacterial infection is present or at risk of developing.

What is Tobradex Eye Drop Used For?

Tobradex is specifically formulated to provide sharp relief from symptoms like redness, swelling, and itching associated with eye infections. It is commonly prescribed for:

  • Bacterial Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye): Effectively clears up bacterial infections and reduces the associated "pink" appearance.
  • Keratitis: Inflammation of the cornea.
  • Post-Surgery Care: Often used after eye operations (like cataract surgery) to prevent infection and manage post-operative swelling.
  • Anterior Uveitis: Treatment of inflammation in the front part of the eye.

Active Ingredients

This dual-action medication contains:

  • Tobramycin (0.3%): An aminoglycoside antibiotic that stops the growth of bacteria such as Staphylococci and Pseudomonas.
  • Dexamethasone (0.1%): A potent steroid that suppresses the body's inflammatory response.

Standard Tobradex Dosage and Administration

For most adults and children, the typical dosage for Tobradex eye drops is:

  • Initial Dose: 1 to 2 drops instilled into the conjunctival sac(s) every 4 to 6 hours.
  • Severe Infections: During the first 24 to 48 hours, your doctor may increase the dosage to 1 or 2 drops every 2 hours.
  • Tapering: As symptoms improve, the frequency of application should be gradually reduced as directed by your physician. Do not stop use abruptly without medical advice.

How to Apply:

  1. Wash your hands thoroughly.
  2. Shake the bottle well before each use to ensure the suspension is mixed.
  3. Tilt your head back and gently pull down the lower eyelid.
  4. Apply the drops without touching the dropper tip to your eye or any other surface.
  5. Close your eye and apply gentle pressure to the corner of the eye (near the nose) for 1 minute to keep the liquid in the eye.

Important Safety Information

Tobradex is a Prescription-Only Medicine (POM).

  • Contact Lenses: Do not wear contact lenses while you have an eye infection. If you must use them, remove lenses before applying Tobradex and wait at least 15 minutes before re-inserting.
  • Pregnancy: Consult a GoMed pharmacist or your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding before using this medication.
  • Side Effects: While many users seek "fast relief," some may experience a temporary "pepperish" or stinging sensation. If this persists, seek medical attention.

Note: In Nigeria, the standard formulation is the 0.3%/0.1% suspension. This differs from "Tobradex ST," which has a different concentration and is less common in the local market.
