What is Floxapen Syrup?
Floxapen Syrup (reconstitutable suspension) is a narrow-spectrum antibiotic containing flucloxacillin (125mg per 5ml). It is a penicillinase-resistant penicillin, meaning it is specifically designed to treat infections caused by bacteria (like Staphylococcus aureus) that are resistant to regular penicillins.
While Floxapen was originally a brand by GSK, due to their exit from direct operations in Nigeria, you may receive the original brand or a high-quality equivalent like Ethiflozin or Fluxacin. All versions supplied by GoMed are NAFDAC-approved and meet strict quality standards.
What is Floxapen Suspension Used For?
This antibiotic is primarily used for infants and children in Nigeria to treat:
- Boils and Abscesses: It is highly effective for "staph" infections on the skin.
- Skin Infections: Impetigo, infected eczema, and infected wounds.
- Respiratory Tract Infections: Tonsillitis, pneumonia, and bronchitis in children.
- Ear Infections: Fast relief for middle ear infections (otitis media).
How to Mix and Use Floxapen Syrup
- Reconstitution: This medicine comes as a dry powder. It must be mixed with water before use. If you buy from GoMed, our pharmacist can mix it for you, or you can follow the bottle instructions using boiled and cooled water.
- Shake Well: Always shake the bottle before measuring each dose.
- Empty Stomach: For best absorption, give the child the dose 30 to 60 minutes before meals.
- Complete the Course: Even if the child feels better or the boil dries up, finish the entire bottle as prescribed to prevent the infection from returning.
For specific dosage instructions for your child, please chat with a GoMed pharmacist.
Storage and Handling
- Refrigeration is Mandatory: Once mixed with water, Floxapen syrup must be stored in a refrigerator (2°C – 8°C).
- Shelf Life: Discard any remaining suspension after 7 to 14 days depending on the manufacturer's label.
- Avoid Heat: Do not store the dry powder in direct sunlight or the mixed syrup at room temperature.
Side Effects and Precautions
Common side effects include mild diarrhea or nausea. However, if your child develops a sudden rash, swelling of the face, or difficulty breathing, stop use immediately and contact a doctor. This medication should not be used by children with a known penicillin allergy.
